Giles of Rome

Giles of Rome
(d. 1316)
   Archbishop, Theologian and Philosopher.
Giles was born in Rome, Italy. He was a student of St thomas aquinas at the University of Paris and he joined the order of Augustinian Hermits. He was appointed General of the order in 1292. He was tutor to King Philip IV of France and he was consecrated Archbishop of Bourges in 1295.
He was a prolific writer, but he is mainly remembered for his political treatise De Regimine Principum and for his De Ecclesiastica Potestate. In this last he defended the power of the Pope as the fulfilment of the ideal promulgated by St augustine in his Civitas Dei. It inspired Pope Boniface VIII’s famous bull Unam Sanctam, which asserted that it was necessary for salvation for every human being to be subject to the Roman Pontiff. Giles was known as ‘Doctor Fundatissimus’ and his books were prescribed reading in the Augustinian schools after 1287.
